TECA is the Teaching and Education Career Academy preparing their students to become future educators. We take field trips to college to get a feel of what campus life feels like. We have alumni currently attending college at these campuses guide us on a campus tour, and tell us about their experiences in college. At the end, we always get to go to the college food court which is the best part of going on the field trip. We also go on other fun trips like the Aquarium of the Pacific, and a challenging ropes course where we get to participate in fun activities like zip lining and rock climbing for the whole day. In addition to going on many field trips, we also intern at different schools ranging from kindergarten to high school classes. Also, TECA students of all grades participate in a field day. Field day is a time when the whole academy goes to the beach and participates in a variety of fun teamwork activities. The field day is exciting, a great bonding experience, and is like a preview of the overnight camping trip TECA seniors go on every year. During our TECA sophomore year, we intern at Brekke Norman Elementary. Each student gets to choose what grade they would like to intern in. My experience at Brekke was wonderful. I got to make memories with the students and also the teachers, but the best part was I got to intern in a second-grade class and the teacher was my teacher when I went to school there, so it was a new experience for the both of us since it wasn’t like the first time we were in the same classroom. For our junior year of high school, we got to intern at Frank Middle School. I would have to say there is a big difference from elementary school to middle school. The kids are much more to themselves and you don’t as much in the class, but we do get to pick the subject that we would like to intern in. Lastly, for our senior year of high school, we get to intern at our very own high school. Working with kids is a wonderful experience and that is the reason why interning at the different levels of schools is such a valuable experience. Students get a feel of which grade (grades) they would like to teach the most, and experiencing “hand-on” learning from a veteran teacher is such a great experience; all this while being able to help students as if you were the teacher. The T.E.C.A. teachers also make a huge impact on their students because we are in their classes for 3 years, we form a bond with one another.
