As we reach the end of March, Pacifica’s Knowledge Bowl team concludes their annual competitions. Led by their advisor Mr. Valdez, English teacher and part of the Health Science Academy, Pacifica competes against schools such as Buena, Channel Islands, Hueneme, Oxnard, Camarillo, Rio Mesa, Santa Paula, Newbury Park, and St. Bonaventure.

Knowledge Bowl is a competition in which high school students test their knowledge on a wide variety of subjects such as literature, science, history, math, pop culture, geography, and much more. Sponsored by the American Association of University Women, or the AAUW, Knowledge Bowl gives students the opportunity to practice team building skills, expand their knowledge, and interact with students all across the county and district.

“Knowledge Bowl has always been a fun experience with all the teammates and the jokes we create, I’m certainly going to miss this year’s team,” comments his fellow co-captain, Aimee Moreno.

After the competition concluded, Newbury placed in first while Buena placed in second and St. Bonaventure placed in third. Although Pacifica’s team was not able to place, they proved to be a strong team and a worthy competitor.

“I have been in Knowledge Bowl for two years and it has been a great experience,” says Edward Luna, co-captain of the Knowledge Bowl team, “I have enjoyed it very much. This year I had the honor of being co-captain with my friend Aimee. I wish I would have joined sooner. Overall, it is a fun way to challenge yourself intellectually while at the same time getting to know very interesting people. Knowledge Bowl is definitely a highlight of my time here at Pacifica.”

With both captains graduating from Pacifica, the position of team captain will be given to future sophomore, Alexis Cruz. If interested in joining Knowledge Bowl next year, please visit Mr. Valdez in room F202.
